10-Day Alaska: Hubbard Glacier, Skagway & Juneau

Explore the wilds of Alaska for 10 days on this roundtrip cruise from Seattle. At 12 miles in length, Mendenhall Glacier is the big attraction in Juneau. But there’s also dog sledding adventures, glacier treks, float plane tours over the icefields and nature galore. You’ll also explore Alaska’s oldest city, Sitka, where wilderness and culture live in perfect harmony. This once-thriving fur port boasts Russian, Tlingit and American influences. Visit the raptor centers, shop for Russian lacquer boxes and see Michael’s Cathedral with its beautiful onion dome. Before or after your cruise, Seattle has much to offer visitors. A favorite is the Chihuly Glass Museum and Garden, where Dale Chihuly displays his jaw-dropping masterpieces. Head to the top of the Space Needle for views of Mount Rainier and the city.

Juneau

Enjoy this well rounded view of Alaska's capital city as you experience the splendor of Mendenhall Glacier, and dine Alaska-style at Gold Creek Salmon Bake. First you'll have time to explore the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area -- home to Alaska's only "drive-up" glacier. Here you'll want to explore the Visitor Center, various viewpoints of the glacier, and outlying trails as your visit time permits. Take a short ride to the Gold Creek Salmon Bake where you'll dine on grilled wild Alaska salmon and a variety of side dishes as fixings under a canopy. After your meal it's a short drive via shuttle back to the ship.

Icy Strait Point

ATV Expedition - There is no better way to experience Alaska’s rugged terrain than by driving an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) through the forests and mountains on Chichagof Island. Following a short orientation on how best to operate an ATV in the Alaskan wilderness, you will set off on your outdoor adventure. The entire island (America’s fifth largest) lies within the limits of the 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest, which has the distinction of being America’s largest national forest. The terrain ranges from seaside estuaries to alpine mountain peaks, and you will have plenty of chances to stop and view the gorgeous scenery. With its remote location and limited accessibility, Chichagof is home to some of the animals most often associated with Alaska. In fact, the island has the world’s largest brown bear population, estimated to be three bears per square mile. You might also see bald eagles soaring above, land otters, Sitka black-tail deer and red squirrels.

Ketchikan

Back Country Jeep & Canoe Safari - Drive a four-wheel drive automatic Jeep Wrangler along mountainous roads through Tongass National Forest. Befriend your fellow travelers and group into teams of 4 per Jeep. The safari travels from sea level to the sub-alpine region of this unique coastal island. Learn about the area's natural history as you drive abandoned logging roads. Along the way, you’ll make a stop to take advantage of photo opportunities and to rotate drivers so everyone has a turn at the wheel.

Your next destination is the secluded mountain lake - Lake Harriet Hunt - where you’ll board a Tlingit-style 37 foot, 20 passenger canoe, much like the Alaska Natives used to travel the coastal waterways. Your safari guide will then lead a brief nature walk through old-growth forest from the remote camp where your cook will prepare an Alaska-style snack.
